What is Magic Mouthwash?

What is Magic Mouthwash?

Mouthwashes and rinses can be compounded with many different ingredients depending on what we are trying to treat.  They are usually compounded with three or more ingredients.

Many times you will hear these mouthwashes referred to as Magic Mouthwash or Miracle Mouthwash. Magic Mouthwash is used for things such as stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth tissue), burning mouth syndrome, mucositis, chemotherapy burns, canker sores and oral infections, just to name a few.

The most common ingredients in magic mouthwash are diphenhydramine (Benadryl), viscous lidocaine, and oral antacid (Maalox). In addition to these ingredients, sometimes we add medications like hydrocortisone (steroid) or tetracycline (antibiotic).
